Pricing is the make-or-break moment of any garage sale. Price too high and everything sits there while shoppers smile politely and keep walking. Price too low and you'll sell out by 9 AM but feel like you gave your stuff away. Let's find the sweet spot.

The Golden Rule of Garage Sale Pricing

Here it is: people expect to pay 10-30% of retail price. That's the mental model every garage sale shopper walks in with. A shirt that cost $40 new? They're expecting $4-8. A KitchenAid mixer that retailed for $300? They might pay $40-60 if it's in great shape.

This can sting — especially when you remember what you paid. But here's the thing: the alternative is hauling it to Goodwill for $0, letting it collect dust for another year, or paying to have it removed. A garage sale isn't a consignment shop. It's a "turn stuff into cash in one morning" event, and the pricing should reflect that. (If you're still in the planning stage, our complete guide to having a successful garage sale covers everything from setup to signage.)

If something is genuinely valuable (collectibles, antiques, high-end tools), consider selling it on eBay or Facebook Marketplace instead. Garage sales are best for volume — lots of items moving quickly at accessible prices.

Pricing by Category

Clothing

ItemSuggested Price
T-shirts, casual tops$1-3
Jeans, pants$3-5
Dresses, blazers$3-8
Coats and jackets$5-15
Brand name / designer (good condition)$5-15
Kids' clothing$0.50-2
Baby clothes (bundles of 5-10)$3-5 per bundle
Shoes (good condition)$2-5
Shoes (designer/barely worn)$5-15

Tips: Clothes sell better on hangers on a rack than folded on a table. Group by size if you have enough volume. "Like new with tags" is magic — call it out on the price sticker.

Books, Movies & Music

ItemSuggested Price
Paperback books$0.50-1
Hardcover books$1-3
Coffee table / art books$3-5
DVDs$1-2
Blu-rays$2-3
Vinyl records (common)$1-2
Vinyl records (good condition, popular artists)$3-10
Video games$2-10 depending on title and console

Tips: A "fill a bag for $5" deal on books clears inventory fast and feels like a steal to the buyer. Nobody's buying individual paperbacks for $1 — but they'll happily grab 10 for $5.

Kitchen & Dining

ItemSuggested Price
Utensils, spatulas, can openers$0.50-1
Pots and pans (individual)$2-5
Full cookware set$10-25
Small appliances (blender, toaster, coffee maker)$5-10
Stand mixer (working)$30-60
Dishes and plates (per piece)$0.50-1
Full dish set$5-15
Glassware (per piece)$0.50-1
Mugs$0.50-1
Tupperware / food storage (with lids!)$0.50-2
Cast iron skillet$5-15

Tips: Small appliances sell great as long as they work. Put a "WORKS!" sticker on anything electric. If you have the box or manual, that bumps the price up a couple bucks. Missing lids on containers? Just donate them — nobody wants lidless Tupperware.

Electronics

ItemSuggested Price
Phone chargers and cables$1-2
Bluetooth speakers$3-10
Headphones / earbuds$2-5
Old smartphones (working)$10-30
Tablets (working)$15-50
Laptops (working, older)$25-75
Printers$5-15
Monitors$10-25
Gaming controllers$5-10
Smart home devices (Alexa, Google Home)$5-15

Tips: Electronics need to be priced to sell because buyers can't test them on the spot. Be upfront about condition: "Works great, just upgraded" vs. "Powers on but hasn't been used in a while." If you're not sure it works, price it at $1-2 as an "as-is" item. And please — factory reset phones and tablets before selling.

Furniture

ItemSuggested Price
Folding chairs$2-5
Dining chairs (each)$5-15
End tables / nightstands$5-20
Coffee tables$10-30
Bookshelves$10-30
Dressers$15-50
Desks$15-40
Couches / sofas$25-75
Dining table (with chairs)$30-75
Bed frame$15-40

Tips: Furniture is the #1 category where people will negotiate, so price it ~20% above your minimum. Stage it nicely — pull that dresser into the driveway, open the drawers so people can see it's clean inside. Big items are also where "make me an offer" works well, especially in the last hour.

Toys & Kids' Stuff

ItemSuggested Price
Action figures, dolls, small toys$0.50-2
Board games (complete)$2-5
Puzzles (complete)$1-2
LEGO sets (complete with instructions)$5-20
LEGO (loose, by the bag)$3-5 per gallon bag
Bikes (kids')$10-25
Strollers$10-30
Car seats (less than 6 years old, no recalls)$15-30
Pack 'n Play / playpen$10-25
Baby swing / bouncer$5-15

Tips: "All pieces included" is the most important thing you can communicate on games and puzzles. If pieces are missing, just donate it or toss it. Kids' stuff is high-demand at garage sales, so price fairly and it'll move fast. Do not sell car seats that are expired, recalled, or have been in an accident.

Tools & Outdoor

ItemSuggested Price
Hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.)$1-3
Power tools (working)$10-40
Lawn mower (push, working)$25-50
Weed trimmer$10-20
Garden tools (shovels, rakes, hoes)$2-5
Hoses$2-5
Patio furniture (per piece)$5-20
Grill (working)$15-50
Camping gear (tents, sleeping bags)$5-25
Coolers$3-10

Tips: Tools are garage sale gold. Serious buyers come specifically for tools and will show up early. Brand-name power tools (DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee) command a premium even used. Clean them up and display them prominently. (Curious which categories are worth your energy? See our breakdown of what sells best at garage sales.)

Sports & Fitness

ItemSuggested Price
Dumbbells (per pair)$5-15
Yoga mat$2-5
Resistance bands$1-3
Tennis rackets$3-8
Golf clubs (individual)$2-5
Golf club set (with bag)$15-40
Bikes (adult)$20-60
Skateboards$5-15
Treadmill / exercise bike$25-75
Sports balls (football, basketball, soccer)$2-5

Tips: Fitness equipment is bulky and people want it gone — that works in your favor as a seller because buyers know they're getting a deal on something that's expensive to ship from Amazon.

Home Décor & Seasonal

ItemSuggested Price
Picture frames$1-3
Mirrors$3-10
Lamps$3-10
Throw pillows$1-3
Curtains$2-5
Rugs (small)$3-10
Vases$1-5
Candles (unused)$1-2
Christmas decorations (per box or bundle)$3-10
Halloween / seasonal décor$1-5

Tips: Holiday décor sells surprisingly well — especially Christmas — but timing matters. Selling Christmas stuff in September? Not great. Selling it in November? You'll barely get it on the table before it's gone.

Pricing Strategies That Work

The color dot system. Buy a few sheets of colored dot stickers. Assign each color a price: green = $1, blue = $3, yellow = $5, red = $10, orange = make an offer. Tape a legend to your table. This is way faster than writing individual prices and makes checkout a breeze.

Bundle deals. "All books $0.50 each or fill a bag for $5." "Kids' clothes: $1 each or 5 for $3." Bundles move volume and give buyers that sweet "I'm getting a deal" feeling.

The "make an offer" tag. Use this on items where you're not sure of the value or on big-ticket items where negotiation is expected. It invites conversation without anchoring too low.

End-of-day discounts. At 1 PM, announce "everything half off." At 2 PM, switch to "fill a box for $5." Your goal at this point is to not carry things back inside. Every dollar beats zero dollars. (Not sure when to schedule your sale for maximum traffic? Read best days and times to hold a yard sale.)

Things to Never (or Almost Never) Sell at a Garage Sale

Some things aren't worth putting out. They either won't sell, will cause problems, or are better sold elsewhere:

  • Recalled products — especially kids' items and car seats. Check cpsc.gov.
  • Used mattresses — health codes in many areas prohibit this, and buyers avoid them regardless.
  • Underwear and swimwear — just donate or toss.
  • Expired car seats — check the manufacture date on the label.
  • Items worth $100+ — sell these on eBay or Facebook Marketplace where you can reach buyers willing to pay fair value.
  • Anything broken "for parts" — unless you price it at $1 and label it clearly, it'll just sit there.

One Last Tip

Round your prices. Nobody wants to make change for $3.75. Stick to $0.50, $1, $2, $3, $5, $10, $15, $20, and $25 increments. Your buyers will thank you, and your cash box will be a lot easier to manage.
